Tobi, who was actually Obito Uchiha in disguise, was already a disillusioned young man warped by Madara into fulfilling his dream of an ideal world. Pain, on the other hand, was warped by Tobi. Nagato already was struggling with the state of the world when his best friend Yahiko fell. Though that twisted his mind, it was Tobi who corrupted him and turned Akatsuki into a force of destruction. When heartbroken and lost, Pain became a shell of himself.

Obito capitalized on the vulnerable Nagato and made a monstrous puppet out of the once powerful and kind ninja. The Second Shinobi War was devastating for all parties involved. Villages were destroyed, many lives were lost, and good people did very bad things. During this terrible time, Nagato and his parents kept each other safe and helped the wounded.

When Konoha warriors broke into their home looking for food, the little family tried to sneak out. They were caught, though, and Nagato's parents tried to attack the intruders so that he could escape. Though the ninja quickly overpowered them, they didn't realize these were only civilians until it was too late. After that, Nagato was an orphan. Finding Konan and Yahiko was the only thing that saved him from growing up alone.

There are two nature transformations that aren't elemental: Yin and Yang Releases. These releases are connected to life forces and energy. Yang Release, in particular, can breathe life into form -- it is creation. While Pain is a master of the style, his signature moves don't come from this Jutsu. During his childhood, it was more impressive that he could dabble in Yang Release, which was something few adults could even do.

However, he does use moves like Chibaku Tensei adeptly, which might draw refinement from his Yang Release abilities. Overall, Nagato's body was impressive then and his capabilities remain impressive to this day. Furthermore, it can only be used by ninja that can use all of the basic nature transformations. When the ability is activated, the user creates a repelling force which acts as a shield around them pushing everything away. Understandably, that means it's most often used as a powerful defensive move.

It can repel even forces like the Amaterasu. However, it can also be destructive, decimating anything it's directed towards. This ability is entirely based on chakra, so it's understandable an Uzumaki would find strength and ease with it.

When Pain uses it too forcefully, like when decimating Konoha, it can shorten his life. For a long time after leaving the Ame orphans, Jiraiya heard from other travelers of their heroic exploits and was proud. However, at a certain point, he stopped hearing about them at all. He assumed his beloved orphans had been slain and accepted that. That was hardly close to the truth, though. After Yahiko's passing, Pain and Konan simply went underground and turned their organization secretive.

When they were so open, they lost their leader, Yahiko, after all. Years later, after building up quick a system and an army, the orphans resurfaced. Jiraiya may have thought their bodies and souls passed on, but instead they evolved into something far more horrifying.

Despite his later exploits, Nagato was once a shy, kind-hearted child. Yahiko, the most charismatic, idealistic orphan did that. Though more guarded, Pain was dedicated to Yahiko and they were like brothers. He planned on fulfilling his plans, no matter what. Overall, regardless of being a villain or hero, Nagato did everything for the sake of someone else. He chased Yahiko's dreams for him. Pain brutally took care of Amekagure, even it ended with cruelty. Mix a warped, corrupted mind with a desperation to help others, and Nagato became a dangerous, relentless foe.

After Yahiko's life ended terribly, Nagato desperately fought against the man at fault: Hanzo, the new leader of Amegakure village. After all, the monster caused his best friend's passing and still held his other best friend, Konan, hostage. Pain decimated Hanzo's forces and got Konan back, but Hanzo still crippled his legs and got away.

Because of this, his real body stays frail and ill, hidden somewhere else, while his Six Paths acted as his bodies.

His control of them lets him be a leader and weapon. After All, his broken body wasn't his best option. However, in a sense, losing his legs is exactly how Nagato became a nearly invincible, mysterious "god". When The Six Paths of Pain starts to become a threat to Konoha and the surrounding lands, Jiraiya is quick to confront him. Particularly since the leader of them, the Deva Path, was his old student Yahiko.

The Six Paths of Pain, once all working together, overpower the legendary Sannin and defeat him. As he draws his last breaths, he realizes he's met all the different paths in his travels, all powerful people from different villages. Nagato hypothesized if Jiraiya figured out the secret to the Six Paths of Pain that he could defeat them.

Though he lost, the seconds of his life were spent writing a message that helped Konoha shinobi discover the truth. Many puppeteer ninja can control bodies, dolls, objects, the like.

However, with the help of his Rinnegan, Pain is able to control the Six Paths of Pain simultaneously and use their bodies as if they were his own. Because of this, he's easily one of the most powerful and legendary puppeteers to have existed. Bringing back six corpses and choreographing their movements effectively is impressive. Even better, he does it all from his base, where he lies crippled, and uses those bodies as his mask.

He's not a short-term puppeteer, he's in constant control of these six bodies and doing all he can with them to fulfill his motives.

While Nagato's body is broken and frail, between his Six Paths of Pain and his secrets, he's nearly invincible. Ever the dark side of the group, Orochimaru offered to kill the orphans so that they wouldn't suffer anymore. Jiraiya, however, felt shamed by the children, knowing that he had played a part in the war that orphaned them.

As penance, he gave the trio a place to stay, and taught them survival skills. Initially, he refused to train them in ninjitsu — until Nagato's Rinnegan emerged. Then, he began to train the three in the art of war — setting the orphans on the path to eventually forming the Akatsuki.

Nagato's most potent power is his command of the Rinnegan, or "Samsara Eye. Legend has it that the Rinnegan is bestowed in times of great crisis, and that its wielder will either become a god of creation Those possessing its power can master any jutsu, observe the flow of chakra, and unlock unique abilities.

Nagato's Rinnegan was placed within him by the villainous Madara Uchiha. Madara, knowing his death was near, passed the power onto the young boy as part of a plan to restore himself to life.

The Rinnegan set Nagato on a path that he had almost no control over: The power of the eye, combined with the machinations of Madara's minions and the immense pain that Nagato suffered throughout his life, twisted him into a fiendish mastermind. This was very much according to Madara's plan, ensured by his underling, Tobi, who manipulated Nagato into villainy, following Yahiko's death. Nagato, in many ways, never stood a chance. Nagato didn't stay Nagato forever — eventually he became the malcontent known as Pain.

But how did that transition come about? Nagato and his companions trained under Jiraiya for years. Empowered by the Rinnegan, Nagato mastered everything he was taught with ease, and in time, the trio set out on their own, eager to make the world a better place. They formed the Akatsuki, led by Yahiko, an organization dedicated to ending war and promoting peace. Their ranks swelled quickly — they were far from alone in being tired of endless war — and in no time, they had become a formidable power that had to be listened to.

Hanzo, leader of Amegakure, took particular notice. Hanzo offered to work with the Akatsuki, and organized a meeting to discuss an arrangement. It was an ambush, however — Hanzo and his forces captured Konan, threatening to kill her if Nagato did not kill Yahiko. Yahiko took the decision out of Nagato's hands by impaling himself on Nagato's kunai.

Nagato is utterly disillusioned by the attack, and comes to regard his previous, peaceful ideals as naive. Accordingly, he renamed himself Pain, and shifted the Akatsuki's goals: Now, the group was dedicated to bringing so much suffering upon the world, it would have no choice but to work towards peace.

Pain, newly cynical and massively powerful, took over Amegakure, killing Hanzo and all who supported him. But in rescuing Konan from Hanzo, he had lost the use of his legs and became a recluse, mastering a technique that allowed him to control corpses as macabre puppets to carry out his bidding. His power over the village, combined with his life in hiding and unsettling powers, cast a spell over the people of Amegakure — they began to treat Pain as a god. His aesthetic choices furthered this deification: Pain spent most of his life ensconced within a wooden altar.

Every Sunday, he made it rain in Amegakure, and kept news of Hanzo's death from making it way into the wider world. Beyond their borders, people believed Amegakure to be locked within a never-ending civil war. But Pain was not as all-powerful as he appeared to be. Though the people living under his reign were utterly ignorant of this, he was secretly being controlled by the malicious Tobi to further the goals of the new Akatsuki.

Pain maintained his terrifying control over the recently deceased through a technique known as The Six Paths of Pain. But the names of the Six Paths are far from fantasy.

Each of the six paths are named for and based around the six Buddhist paths of reincarnation : the Deva, Asura, Human, Animal, Preta and Naraka paths. Naraka is the lowest level of reincarnation. It is an appropriately hellish path in the series, utilizing a sort of torture to interrogate people.

Preta are ghosts filled with desire and possessiveness. By doing so, it always rips its victims' soul out of their bodies, instantly killing them.

Even worse, it could extract the soul from every body part it grabbed. That is to say: anyone it caught was already as good as dead. Moreover, the Human Path is the fastest of the six, to the point that even sensor ninjas could not immediately sense it coming, and were caught off-guard before they could react.

Nagato has used two of them, the first used to be a ninja from the famed Fuma clan, then a young girl, likely from Amegakure. The Animal Path wields Nagato's power of Summoning, being able to summon many giant monsters unique to it, as well as anyone related to Nagato, as evidenced when it summoned Konan.

The large number of highly dangerous monsters it can summon makes the Animal Path arguably the third most powerful and the one with the most diverse abilities. All summoned monsters have piercings similar to the Six Paths, implying that Nagato controls them like he does with the Six Paths, and the Rinnegan, enabling Nagato to see through their eyes.

Both Nagato and the Six Paths frequently use them as mounts. The summoned monsters are:. It can absorb people's chakra through physical contact, replenishing Nagato's own strength. It most often catches its targets and drains their energy until they die. It can absorb any Ninjutsu technique within seconds, making it a priceless defence for the other Paths. By creating a barrier spell around its body, the Preta Path could absorb chakra-based attacks from all sides.

The King of Hell can only be seen by its victims, or those with perception power. It has Rinnegans so Nagato can see through its eyes.

The King of Hell can devour people's very life, but also store dead souls and resurrect those it swallows, including the Paths of Pain, As such, Nagato always has the Nakara Path protected by the other five. When the Naraka Path catches someone, the King of Hell appears and forms tendrils from its mouth to question them.

The King of Hell devours the life of those who lie or refuse to talk, but releases those who tell the truth. Each Path of Pain has at least one of these weapons, made of the same material as the Chakra Receivers. Not only does each Path of Pain wields them with incredible proficiency, but even Nagato's walking machine can shoot them like javelins.

Nagato can infuse the body of anyone stabbed by these blades with his chakra, disrupting the victims' own chakra and hindering the use of their powers. At close distance, he is able to remotely control their bodies like one of the Six Paths. The victim needs to have a chakra even stronger that Nagato's to overcome this.
